"The monkfish was a revelation; the big meaty chunks of fish worked exceptionally well encased in crisp batter. The fish is always served with some of the most gloriously hot and crispy chips I have ever eaten and they are presented together in a neat box with a wedge of lemon and spring of parsley. They are never soggy or overly greasy and taste divine, the flavor only dripping can bring. All the usual trimmings are available too - mushy peas, homemade tartar sauce, and even aioli and curry sauce.... Read more
"Well what can I say about this Cod and Chips, it was probably the best I've ever had. The chips were crispy on the outside and still fluffy in the middle and with lashings of salt and vinegar they were perfect. The fish though was on another level, I never really appreciated how good Cod can be until I had this. The flesh was tender and juicy whilst being perfectly flakey and the batter was crispy and luscious."
"Stein’s Fish & Chips is ideal for those who fancy enjoying an unfussy bite to eat al fresco. The popular harbourside restaurant and takeaway serves locally caught fish fried in traditional beef dripping alongside chips, mushy peas, and homemade tartare sauce."
"Fish is at it's freshest, selection is impressive and I like the fact you can either go for fried or grilled one. Tartare sauce was to die for, batter extremely crispy, real proper chips and garnish of lemon wedge and parsley just added this extra touch, as well as nicely presented box and wooden curterly. Highly recommended!"
"We returned to our cozy van, which was parked alongside the pier, and tucked in. I have no doubt that the “oohs” and “aahs” were audible outside the van. We had finally found it – this was undoubtedly the best fish & chips we had ever eaten. The fish was dead fresh and perfectly cooked, moist on the inside and crispy on the outside. The chips were to die for – a deep golden, caramelized, crispy exterior with a moist and flavourful interior."
"For the main event we chose battered plaice and chips – plaice is always my fish of choice from a chippy if it’s available! The fish was beautifully cooked and delicate, with a crunchy batter and crisp, slightly soft chips – just the way they’re supposed to be. Make sure to buy a pot of homemade aioli for dunking your chips into – you will regret it if you don’t."
"Stein's Fish & Chips in Padstow always attracts long queues, partly because of the fish that's impeccably fried in beef dripping, partly because of the ferocious appetite you work up on the trudge along the delightful Camel Trail, and partly because of owner Rick, Padstow's capo di tutti capi."
"Top 10 Fish and Chip Shops in the South West: Stein's Fish & Chips - If you can face the queues (horrendous in high season but not an issue the rest of the year) you will be rewarded with an amazing choice of fish (battered or grilled), sauces and dripping-cooked chips. The ultimate posh Chippy."
"When it comes to fish, who better to run a chippy than the 20th century Poseidon himself, Rick Stein."
"There is a constant queue of locals and tourists snaking along Padstow's harbour wall outside this chippie during the summer months because the punters know it will be worth the wait. The chips are home-made, as are the mushy peas and mayonnaise-based tartare sauce."
