Muffuletta

Recommended by Jane & Michael Stern and 11 other food critics.
"In our opinion, this mighty muffuletta (available as a half sandwich for puny appetites) is definitive. Yes, other restaurants now make fatter ones on artisan breads with more exotic cold cuts and fancier ingredients in the olive salad, but this big fella has a classic dignity that simply cannot be bettered."

"At Central Grocery in New Orleans, they use their famous olive salad to dress deli meats and cheeses in an irresistible sandwich. It's best eaten the day after it's made, to allow the salad to marinate the other ingredients."
"Old-school Italian market Central Grocery remains the definitive place to buy your muffuletta, which is served quartered, at room temperature, and wrapped in paper."
"The Most Amazing Muffulettas in the Big Easy: Central Grocery and Deli - If you’ve never been there, do yourself a favor and wait in line for the original, if only for the experience."
"These days, Central Grocery is definitely not the only place in New Orleans where you can get one of these behemoth sandwiches, but they are still probably the best."
"It was almost like a chewy focaccia bread with toasted sesame seeds on top and it was soft, but not tender, light or fluffy. I’m not sure if it gets better."
"The Mecca of the Muffuletta – Central Grocery in New Orleans."
"The 5 Best Muffuletta Sandwiches in New Orleans: Central Grocery and Deli - The queue of muffuletta pilgrims snaking out the door onto Decatur Street has been a French Quarter fixture since the home of “The Original” moved to this location in 1919. Inside, an assembly line layers Genoa salami, Holland ham, mortadella, the grocery’s proprietary olive salad, Swiss and provolone cheese on an 8-inch circle of bread."
"It’s a mythological concoction of round Italian bread, cold cuts, cheeses and olive salad. Be warned: share one sandwich between two people or you’ll be overwhelmed!"
"Central Grocery's muffuletta is by far one of the most iconic sandwiches in New Orleans. It's cheap. It's huge. It's wrapped up like a present, and waiting in line to get one is an experience everybody should have at least once in their lifetime."

"The home of the muffuletta! This shop is a French Quarter icon. They also have them pre-wrapped for those who would like to take some on a plane, as I often do when visiting family out of state."
