Introduction & history

Turon is a Phillipino snack, often eaten for merienda, that consists of saba bananas rolled in sugar and pieces of jackfruit, enveloped in lumpia wrappers. It is fried typically in vegetable oil, with sugar often added to the oil, so when finished frying, a turon roll ends up with a caramel coating. Other popular combos besides banana and jackfruit, include bananas with either sweet potato, mango, coconut, and/or cheddar. There is also a special kind of turon from Malabon that is triangle shaped and has a sweet mung bean filling. The lumpia wrappers are usually made just with salt, water, and flour, but if those are not readily available, spring roll wrappers can be used instead, although they are slightly thicker. The bananas are sliced in half lengthways, while jackfruit is sliced into strips.
