WHERE TO EAT The best French onion soup (Soupe à l’oignon) in the world (according to food experts)

1

Au Pied de Cochon

ParisFrance
6 Rue Coquillière
Recommended by Travel + Leisure and 20 other food critics.
"This Paris-based restaurant treats hungry guests to steaming bowls of onion soup at any time of day. The Polanco location, open 24/7, is a favorite hangout for local businessmen, celebrities and all sorts of other night owls."
2

Les Philosophes

ParisFrance
28 Rue Vieille du Temple
Recommended by Laurie Jo Miller Farr and 10 other food critics.
"It's hard to find a bad onion soup in Paris. If jet lag produces hunger pangs at odd hours, it's good to know that Les Philosophes, 28 Rue Vieille du Temple in the Marais district, has five-star onion soup and is open from 9 a.m. to 2 a.m."
3

La Jacobine

ParisFrance
59 Rue Saint-André des Arts
Recommended by Roy Kimhi and 12 other food critics.
"One of the things I miss the most is the french onion soup I used to have at ‘La Jacobine’, a small restaurant that has an amazing silky heavy texture onion soup covered with a lot of cheese, perhaps the best french onion soup I’ve had."
4

La Petite Chaise

ParisFrance
36 Rue de Grenelle
Recommended by Alexander Lobrano and 6 other food critics.
"Well, it was excellent, with the delicious, deep taste of roasted marrow bones and a gooey cap of melted Gruyère."
5

Brasserie Balzar

ParisFrance
49 Rue des Écoles
Recommended by Fodor's Travel and 6 other food critics.
"The restaurant attracts politicians, writers, tourists, and local eccentrics - and remains one of the city's classic brasseries: the perfect stop before or after a film in a local art-house cinema. Don't expect miracles from the kitchen, but stick to evergreens like onion soup."
6

Le Grand Colbert

ParisFrance
2 Rue Vivienne
Recommended by Jan Moir and 6 other food critics.
"Le Grand Colbert has been here since 1830 and, potato snacks aside, the menu has probably not changed much since then. Onion soup... So far so rigorously authentic."
7

Flottes

ParisFrance
2 Rue Cambon
Recommended by Richard Glover and 5 other food critics.
"Greed trumps culture for Number Nine, and we find the perfect traditional bistro Flottes, where the delicious onion soup could have been brought to the table for Audrey Hepburn all those decades ago."
8
Recommended by Susan Thye and 4 other food critics.
"The onion soup (€9.50/AUD$15.45) was like drinking a bowl of happiness, it was laden with what felt like the lives of hundreds of onions cooked till tender and then layered with bread and then there’s the magic that is melted cheese."
9

Café de la Paix

ParisFrance
5 Place de l'Opéra
Recommended by The Yums and 3 other food critics.
"French onion soup has been on the menu since 1862 and is a restaurant original. The portion was generous. It’s made with white wine, chicken, and beef broth with an abundance of aged Comté cheese and croutons. The smell was intoxicating and my husband said it was “the best” onion soup, hands down. I took a taste and it was delightfully sweet. I had to agree, this was the best onion soup I’ve tasted."
10

Le Procope

ParisFrance
13 Rue de l'Ancienne Comédie
Recommended by Abigail Royston and 3 other food critics.
"It was probably the best soup I had ever eaten, with a massive tick layer of melted cheese which made up almost a third of the plate. Just fabulous."
