Puran poli is a sweet flatbread that is traditionally made during Ganesha Chaturthi, a Hindu festival celebrating the birthday of Lord Ganesha, son of Shiva and Parvati. Originating from the state of Maharashtra, the flatbread consists of flour, turmeric powder, salt, water and ghee (Indian clarified butter), and the sweet filling consists of black gram lentils, jaggery (cane sugar) and cardamom powder.
"The final stretch, dessert...alternating mouthfuls of silky roti-like layers of puran poli, with sweet crumbly jaggery stuffing, and creamy mouthfuls of aam ka ras."
"Puran poli and panki, which is cooked in banana leaf and made of moong dal and besan... oh divine!"
"The highlight of my lunch was the puran poli and the shrikhand, both made in-house. Must try: Puran poli!"
