At its most basic, America's favorite cheesy snack is nothing more than breaded and fried mozzarella sticks. To prepare, sticks of mozzarella are dipped in flour, eggs, and breadcrumbs and then fried in oil until golden. Variations on the basic recipe include adding various seasonings, such as basil, thyme, and oregano to the batter, or double coating the mozzarella sticks. Mozzarella sticks are typically served with marinara sauce — or with raspberry sauce, if you’re in Albany — and paired with cold soda drinks or beer.

This recipe teaches you how to make the simplest version of mozzarella sticks, no fancy breading or seasonings, just mozzarella sticks coated in flour, eggs, and breadcrumbs and fried.
1⁄4 cup flour
1 cup breadcrumbs
2 eggs
1 tbsp milk
1 lb mozzarella cheese, cut into 3/4 inch x 3/4 inch strips (or you can use string cheese and cut each in half)
1 cup vegetable oil
1 cup jarred pizza sauce or 1 cup marinara sauce
Whisk the eggs and the milk in one bowl, place the flour in another bowl and pour the breadcrumbs onto a plate.
Dip each mozzarella stick first into the flour, then into the egg and milk mixture, and finally, roll it in breadcrumbs. Then, dip them in the egg and milk mixture and in the breadcrumbs one more time to double coat them.
Arrange the mozzarella sticks on a tray, then place it in a freezer for at least an hour.
Fry the stick until golden, about a minute per side.
Transfer them on paper towels to drain first, then serve with marinara or pizza sauce for dipping.
