Mountain Hare | Local Hare From Highland, Scotland | TasteAtlas

Mountain Hare

THIS BREED IS UNCOMMON AND RARE. Although mountain hare is native to the United Kingdom, nowadays it can only be found in the mountainous parts of Scotland, which is a result of a significant reduction in the population of mountain hares over the years.

Mountain hares are smaller than the more common brown hares, and their coats turn white in winter. In ancient times, mountain hares were protected as mystical animals with supernatural powers, and in the 18th and 19th centuries, their meat was consumed in towns and city markets, but today they are rarely seen in restaurants.

Although these hares are uncommon, it is believed that the breed is not under threat of extinction.
