Introduction & history

Most Americans connect the milkshake to childhood: a single sip takes them back to the times when every problem in the world could be solved with this sweet, cold, and tasty beverage. The milkshake is made with milk and ice cream with the addition of flavored syrups and any other ingredients that may come to your mind — whipped cream, melted chocolate, caramel, butterscotch, chocolate chips, coffee, liquors, spices, crushed nuts. The texture depends heavily on the preparation: milkshakes prepared by hand in a traditional steel shaker tend to have a bit denser texture than the ones from an electric blender or a milkshake machine. Other than in the USA, milkshakes are popular in most English-speaking countries, where they are sometimes referred to as thick milkshakes or thick shakes, and in New England and Canada, the term frappe is used to differentiate the ice-cream based milkshake from the one without ice cream. Latin American countries add fruit to their milkshakes,... Read more

Cooking tips

  • milk

To ensure a creamy texture, the best option for a milkshake is full-fat milk since skimmed milk might make the milkshake watery. Vegan options include soy, almond, coconut, or hemp milk, but whichever milk you choose, make sure it is as cold as possible.
  • ice cream

The customary ice cream flavor for a milkshake is plain vanilla, but any other flavor may be used. The quality of the ice cream makes a huge difference in the final result. If possible, choose the best ice cream you can afford: two scoops per serving will suffice.
  • syrups

Vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry are the most usual flavors of syrup used for a milkshake, but any other syrup, such as forest fruit, caramel, or butterscotch, will do the trick.
  • other ingredients

When it comes to milkshakes, imagination is your only limit. You can add liquors, spices, cream, peanut butter, marshmallows, chocolate chips, or any other ingredient you might find tasty. Sweeteners are usually not needed, but a scoop of honey might be a nice addition.
  • serving

If you aim for the original, old-school milkshake, you will need to purchase a steel mixing cup which you will have to shake vigorously to get the right creamy and fluffy texture. In this case, a milkshake is served in tall, high glasses with straws, and the remaining milkshake is brought to the table in the steel mixing cup with a long spoon. A quicker version involves a blender or a food processor,... Read more
