"Maggie’s permanently sports a ‘fully booked’ sign at the bottom of its rickety stairs, and no wonder: the vast, pearly fish in its light batter escapes from the confines of its plate; the chips – crisp and floury, always double-fried – are some of the best I’ve tried. We exit stuffed, our coats fragranced with frying and vinegar, happy as clams."
"Sat right down on the beach, Maggie’s is a no-frills kinda place but their fish ‘n’ chips come in HUGE portions and are all cooked to order by Maggie herself in the open kitchen. But this place is only open for a few hours a day and very busy, so if you want to try some of the best fish ‘n’ chips around you better book ahead."
"It’s lunchtime at Maggie’s Fish & Chips in Hastings and the pine tables are crammed with diners feasting on plates piled-high with golden-fried cod and haddock. The sharp aroma of malt vinegar splashed on thick-cut chips and tartar sauce slathered on butter-soft fish casts its lure onto Rock-a-Nore Road, reeling in the hungry in a way that hasn’t changed in decades."
"It was clear that this place is exceedingly popular with local Hastings residents, and for good reason: we had some of the best fish & chips we’d ever tasted. I was a little overwhelmed at first by the portion size (one plate looked about enough to feed all 3 of us!), but manfully did my best, and it was delicious! The batter was thin and crispy, the cod wonderfully fresh and the chips exceedingly moreish."
"We couldn't start a round-up of Hastings restaurants without celebrating fish and chips, and that's where Maggie's come in. Having served the town for more than thirty years, expect hearty portions and a welcoming atmosphere."
"We pop into Maggie’s Fish and Chips, and have delicious light-battered haddock and crunchy chips with sun-kissed views of the Channel through the window."
"The next day we had fish and chips (cod this time) at a famous restaurant on the beach called Maggie’s. It was delicious."
"Perhaps you were hankering after the cod, the single fish of that species that Joy's boat might safely land each day. I am afraid, dear reader, I ate it. It was battered in Maggie's cafe of food guide fame, over the fish market. Fried to a creamy, melting perfection, it made the best fish and chips I've had for years. If you want some of that, you'll have to go to Hastings yourself."
"Awesome tradition fish and chips."
"It's essentially a crime to visit the seaside and not have fish and chips for supper. While there's no shortage of good chippies, Maggie's Fish & Chips, in one of the tall, tar blackened net huts on Fishermen's Beach serves up sparklingly fresh beer-battered fish, proper fat chips and a tangy homemade tartare sauce. Perfect."
