Hackberries | Local Berries From North America | TasteAtlas

Hackberries

Native to North America, hackberries are dark red berries of the Celtis occidentalis tree. These berries have a thin and sweet purple skin which is surrounding a crunchy shell hiding a tiny nut on the inside. They are high in vitamins, protein, fat, and carbohydrates, making them a power-packed food item that was especially popular with Native Americans during trail hikes.

The texture of these berries is said to be reminiscent of peanut M&Ms. Due to the fact that the seeds are hard, they are usually pounded into pastes or powders before being used in porridges or as a seasoning for meat.
