Tips

  • wine

Glühwein can be made with both white and red wine. When choosing wine, your best bet is a wine that's in the mid-range regarding price. It would be a waste to use an expensive one to make glühwein, but your glühwein would not taste so good if you decide to go with a cheap one. When talking specifically about red wine, choose one low in tannins and acidity and not aged in wooden barrels. White wines ... Read more
  • heating wine

When heating wine, never bring it to a boil because once the wine is at that point, the alcohol evaporates, and the wine turns darker and bitter. Also, boiling wine releases carcinogenic substances. So, to prevent this from happening, do not heat wine over 78°C/172°F.
  • spices

There are not fixed rules when it comes to what spices one can use to make glühwein. However, traditionally, cinnamon, cloves, star anise, and cardamom are most commonly used. Apart from those, vanilla, juniper berries, nutmeg, and ginger are also commonly found in glühwein recipes.
  • alcohol-free glühwein

If desired, you can make glühwein that's alcohol-free. Instead of wine, opt for juice, whether apple, grape, orange, or cherry one; the choice is yours. Also, either black or fruit tea is a good alternative to wine.
  • sweeteners

You can choose different sweeteners depending on taste, either sugar, honey, agave syrup, or fruit juices. You can even sweeten it with jam, which will give the wine a bit of tartness as well, depending on the choice of marmalade.
  • fruit

Glühwein can also include fruit, most commonly citrus fruit either pieces, juice, or peel. Besides citrus fruit, you can also add berries, apples, and pears.
  • equipment

To be safe, always use stainless steel pots, pans, and utensils, for making glühwein. Using copper, aluminum, brass, or tin containers and ladles is not advised because they release harmful substances into the drink.
  • how to recognize poor-quality glühwein

If the glühwein is sticky, it probably has lots of added sugar and spices, which mask the poor quality of the wine. Also, if the glühwein is brown, it means it was cooked for longer than necessary.
