This potato varietal has been grown on plantations in the north of Portugal since the 18th century. The land on which these potatoes are grown is fertilized exclusively with organic fertilizer during the winter. Its unique skin is characterized by its dimples and chestnut-red colored scales.
The Trás os-Montes potato has a pleasant, distinctive, slightly sweet taste, and an extremely high starch content of about 78%. This potato is an irreplaceable ingredient in traditional Portuguese dishes such as cozido barrosão or Carne de Bísaro Transmontano.
