The classic banana split consists of a lengthwise-cut banana, one scoop of vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry ice cream each, chocolate, strawberry and pineapple syrup, whipped cream, nuts such as peanuts, and maraschino cherries. The banana is first peeled and split lengthways then placed in a long dish called a boat. Ice cream scoops are placed in between the two banana slices, and the syrups are drizzled over. The whole thing is topped with whipped cream, then sprinkled with peanuts, and maraschino cherries with a stem attached are placed on top. Variations on the basic recipe include using different flavored ice creams and syrups and adding other kinds of nuts and dried fruits.
