Slices of toasted bread, topped with slices of avocado, which can be left whole, or crushed by a fork into the toast, sprinkled with salt, ground pepper, and lemon juice — that, in short, is the most basic version of avocado toast, the It breakfast dish of the 2010s. Avocado toast variations are endless — poached eggs, bacon, vegetables, or different herbs and seasonings can be added — almost anything goes.

The following avocado toast recipe is inspired by the avocado toast served at Café Gitane in New York, a place responsible for re-introducing it to the United States. All that is needed is a slice of seven-grain bread, avocado, lemon juice, olive oil, salt, and red pepper flakes. You can adjust the recipe to your taste by adding extra ingredients.
1 ½-inch (4 cm) slice seven-grain sandwich bread
1/2 a large, ripe avocado
1 tbsp olive oil
1 tbsp lemon juice, or more to taste
salt
an unholy amount of red pepper flakes
Toast the bread and mash the avocado in a bowl.
Spread the toast generously with the avocado, then drizzle it over first with olive oil, then with lemon juice.
Sprinkle with salt and red pepper flakes.
